My daughter and I worked a two-week medical/dental/surgical mission in the DR (Dajabon) last Feb. 2006 with MMI. It was our first, but not the last. We worked intake for the medical clinics, traveling to a different village everyday. I am an EMT-I in Massachusetts, and my 14 y/o daughter is soon to be a first responder. I will share more with you via email -- we are currently planning our next mission with MMI. When I read, "One Day at a Time," and saw your pictures, I KNEW you went with MMI. More is an email. Chrisemt!!

I had a severe asthma attack when I was 12. It was bad enough that my parents had to call an ambulance. To this day I remeber how nice the paramedic was to me. The way he treated me played a large part in my wanting to be a paramedic. Although I deffinetly have my rough days I really try hard to be nice to my patients and treat them with respect because they are always going to remember the way we treated them. EMS to me isn't all about the traumas and the glory calls (although those can be really cool sometimes) It is about being there for someone when they need us and not making them feel like crap in the process.

Your quote from the Thom Dick book reminds me of the first day from my paramedic class. Our instructor said that nobody ever thanked him for how proficient he was at getting the tube, or how well he ran through the protocols. Nobody ever said anything about his medicine. The thanks he got from people was things like, "He cared about my dad." and "He listed to what we said, and kept us informed about what was going on." and, "He made sure I was comfortable." </></>I hope I never forget that.

Bless you for sharing so eloquently the lesson that the first principle of good medicine is to care - for the patient. The technical skills are great; the cognitive challenge a blast; but sometimes, the patient just needs to be seen as a person, and a simple touch can offer more healing than the most sophisticated medicine. You did good!
