Peter, it WAS above and beyond. I honestly don't think there is anyone else here who would do that, and we hire hundreds of people. Seriously. Not a single other person.

If you are right, does the fact that I recoil in disgust at the idea of wiping someone's ass for them mean that I am not as thorough of a healthcare provider? Does it mean I don't care enough about people to do this well? I hope not.

I thought I went above and beyond the other day when I put a saline lock in a drunk.

I loved the article! I too have not pulled out the bed pan very often, but for another reason. Pulling out a bed pan that has been crammed under the bench seat or in the far reaching depths of a seldom used cubbie hole makes you realize that the bed pan is a lot dirtier and more nasty than what is about to take place. Occasionally I manage to pull out the bed pan (while still trying to find the wash basin that was "accidentally" not restocked after last shift) in time to catch that frosty beer on it's way back up. Hopefully the patient won't notice. I mean, I really did try to quickly and discretely run a couple 4X4's over the dirtiest part before I handed it over. Either way, a dirty bed pan not only looks bad but I sometimes wonder if the patient questions if the bedpan has been 'recycled'. Then the thought hits me. A small trash bag or a large ziplock bag comes in oh so handy to make that bed pan look brand new and oh so spiffy right off the assembly line! Simple little things can mean so much!!!
